The L091 Leporacanthicus triactis, commonly known as the Three Beacon Pleco or Vampire Pleco, is a beautiful and somewhat elusive species from the Loricariidae family. It is highly regarded for its unique appearance and carnivorous diet, as well as its peaceful temperament compared to other Leporacanthicus species. The “three beacons” in its common name refer to the three distinctive white or yellowish markings found on its dorsal fin and tail.
Key Characteristics:
- Appearance:
- Body: L091 has a streamlined, armored body typical of plecos, with large odontodes (bony plates) for protection. Its sharp, pointed head and wide mouth are well-adapted for its carnivorous diet.
- Coloration: The body of the Three Beacon Pleco is predominantly dark gray to black, adorned with its signature three bright yellow or orange spots on the dorsal fin and tail fin. These spots make the L091 stand out and are often the first noticeable feature.
- Size: L091 grows to a medium size, reaching around 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) in length when fully mature, which makes it suitable for larger aquariums.
- Habitat:
- Native regions: L091 is native to the Orinoco River Basin in Venezuela and Colombia. It is found in fast-moving waters with a rocky substrate, where it hides among rocks and driftwood.
- Environment: In the wild, L091 inhabits river systems with high oxygen levels, strong currents, and plenty of submerged rocks and caves, which it uses for shelter.
Behavior:
- Feeding habits: L091 is primarily carnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates, crustaceans, and other meaty foods. In captivity, it thrives on a diet of high-protein foods, including sinking carnivore pellets, bloodworms, shrimp, and occasional fresh vegetables. While it may occasionally nibble on plant material, its diet should be predominantly meat-based.
- Temperament: L091 is generally peaceful but can exhibit territorial behavior, particularly toward other bottom-dwelling fish. It is nocturnal and prefers to remain hidden during the day, becoming more active during the evening and night.
Aquarium Care:
- Tank size: A tank of at least 75 gallons is recommended for L091, especially considering its adult size and territorial nature. A larger tank of 100 gallons or more is advisable if housing it with other bottom-dwellers or large fish.
- Water conditions: L091 thrives in soft to moderately hard water, with a pH range of 6.0–7.5 and temperatures between 24–29°C (75–84°F). Strong water flow and excellent oxygenation are critical, as they replicate the conditions of its natural river habitat.
- Aquascape: The tank should include ample rocks, driftwood, and caves to provide hiding spots and territories for L091. Sand or smooth gravel is ideal for the substrate, as it helps protect their delicate undersides. The setup should mimic a river environment with moderate to strong water flow, and plants can be included, though they are not necessary for the pleco’s well-being.
- Diet: In captivity, the Three Beacon Pleco should be fed a diet rich in protein. Offer sinking carnivore pellets, frozen or live bloodworms, shrimp, and other meaty foods. While it may eat some plant matter or algae, its diet should focus on protein. Occasional blanched vegetables like zucchini or cucumber can be provided as a treat.
Breeding:
- Reproduction: Breeding L091 in captivity is difficult but has been successfully done. They are cave spawners, with males typically guarding the eggs until they hatch. Providing tight-fitting caves and maintaining pristine water conditions can help encourage breeding. The fry should be raised on small, protein-rich foods like baby brine shrimp.
Special Considerations:
- Tank mates: L091 is generally peaceful and can coexist with other fish, provided the tank is large enough. Suitable tank mates include peaceful, medium-sized cichlids, tetras, and other non-aggressive community fish. Avoid housing it with highly aggressive or large territorial fish, as it can become stressed. When kept with other plecos, ensure there are enough hiding places to avoid territorial disputes.
- Territorial behavior: While relatively peaceful, L091 can become territorial with other bottom dwellers, especially plecos, over hiding spots or food. Providing plenty of caves and driftwood to create separate territories is essential.
Notes for Aquarists:
- Water quality: L091 requires clean, well-oxygenated water with strong filtration. It is sensitive to poor water conditions, so regular water changes and maintaining high water quality are crucial for its health.
- Hiding places: As a nocturnal species, L091 needs plenty of hiding places to feel secure during the day. Use a combination of rocks, driftwood, and artificial caves to create suitable hiding spots.
Comparison with Other Leporacanthicus Species:
- Similarities: Like other Leporacanthicus species, L091 is a carnivorous pleco with a preference for meaty foods. It shares the armored body and nocturnal habits of its relatives, and also requires strong water flow and high oxygenation in its tank.
- Differences: The Three Beacon Pleco is distinguished by the three bright spots on its dorsal and tail fins, which set it apart from other species like L240 (Vampire Pleco). It is also considered to be less aggressive and easier to keep with tank mates compared to some other Leporacanthicus species.
