The Red Dragon Flower Horn Cichlid, bred in the USA, is the product of crossbreeding various Central American Cichlids. These fish have a long, streamlined body with prominent dorsal and anal fins. As juveniles, their coloration is silver, but as they age, it transitions to a vivid red. Fully matured, these fish reach around 5 inches in length. For housing, the Red Dragon Flower Horn Cichlid requires a tank of at least 50 gallons, with a sandy substrate, rocks, and ample hiding spots. Live plants should be kept in pots to protect their roots from damage. These fish are territorial and will prey on smaller fish or invertebrates that they can consume. Distinguishing between male and female Red Dragon Flower Horn Cichlids can be challenging, as females are generally smaller and less vibrant in color. It’s best to keep them in neutral water with soft to medium hardness, a pH near 7.0, and temperatures between 78-82°F. These fish are open breeders that require well-oxygenated water. They lay up to 500 eggs in burrows, and the fry are protected by both parents. Once a pair mates, they will spawn repeatedly as the young grow. Being omnivores, Red Dragon Flower Horn Cichlids consume a variety of prepared and frozen foods, such as freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex, ocean plankton, flake food, and Cichlid pellets. Approximate size when purchased: 1 to 3 inches.
