Corydoras sp. (Cory Geryi) is a rare and less commonly seen species of Corydoras, sometimes referred to as Corydoras geryi. This species has not been officially described in scientific literature but is known within the aquarium community by its informal name. Like other Corydoras, it is prized for its peaceful demeanor and unique appearance.

Here are some key details about Corydoras sp. (Cory Geryi):

  • Native Range: This species is believed to be native to South America, likely originating from the Amazon basin or its tributaries, though its exact habitat remains unclear due to its rarity.
  • Size: It grows to about 2 to 2.5 inches (5-6 cm), similar to many other Corydoras species.
  • Appearance: Corydoras geryi is known for its striking and attractive coloration. It typically has a pale or silvery body with darker patches or spots. One of its most notable features is the bold black markings along the dorsal fin and near the tail. It may also have a distinctive pattern around the eyes and on the head.
  • Temperament: Like other Corydoras, Corydoras geryi is peaceful and thrives when kept in groups of at least six individuals. It’s ideal for community tanks with other small, non-aggressive fish.
  • Diet: An omnivorous species, Corydoras geryi enjoys a varied diet of sinking pellets, flakes, and live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. In the wild, they would forage along the riverbed for small organisms and detritus.
  • Water Parameters:
    • pH: 6.0–7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral water is best)
    • Temperature: 72–79°F (22–26°C)
    • Soft to moderately hard water is preferred, as with most Corydoras.
  • Tank Setup: Corydoras geryi does well in a well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spots, such as caves, plants, and driftwood. A soft substrate, like sand, is essential to prevent injury to their barbels, which they use to sift through the substrate in search of food. They prefer low to moderate water flow and clean, well-filtered water.
  • Behavior: These are bottom-dwelling fish that spend most of their time foraging along the substrate. They are peaceful, social fish that benefit from being in groups. Like other Corydoras species, they may swim to the surface occasionally to gulp air, a behavior linked to their ability to perform intestinal respiration.

Corydoras geryi is an excellent choice for hobbyists looking to add a unique and rare species to their community tank. It requires the same level of care as other Corydoras, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists.
