Satanoperca jurupari, commonly known as the Demon Eartheater or Jurupari Eartheater, is a species of freshwater fish in the cichlid family. It is native to the Amazon River basin in South America. Here are some key features of this species:

  • Habitat: Typically found in slow-moving waters such as rivers, streams, and floodplains.
  • Behavior: They are called “eartheaters” because they have a unique feeding habit of sifting through the substrate (sand or gravel) to find food, such as detritus, small invertebrates, and plant material.
  • Size: Adult fish can grow up to about 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) in length.
  • Water conditions: They thrive in slightly acidic to neutral waters, with a pH range of 6.0–7.0, and prefer temperatures between 24–28°C (75–82°F).
  • Temperament: They are generally peaceful and can be kept in community tanks with other non-aggressive species.
  • Appearance: Satanoperca jurupari is recognized for its silvery body with faint vertical striping, often with iridescent spots or colors depending on light and angle.
