The freshwater tiger moray eel (sometimes referred to as the spotted moray eel or Gymnothorax polyuranodon) is a fascinating species, though it is often misunderstood as fully freshwater. Despite its name, it is not truly a freshwater eel, but rather a species that thrives in brackish environments and can tolerate varying levels of salinity.

Here are some key details about the freshwater tiger moray eel:

Appearance:

  • Body: Long and slender with a serpentine form, typical of moray eels.
  • Color: The body is usually dark with tiger-like stripes or spots, which may appear yellowish, brown, or black depending on its habitat and age.
  • Size: Can grow up to about 90 cm (around 35 inches).

Habitat:

  • Native regions: This eel is native to Southeast Asia, Oceania, and the Indo-Pacific regions.
  • Environment: It is found in coastal regions, tidal rivers, and estuaries, preferring brackish water, though it can sometimes be found in pure freshwater for limited periods.

Diet:

  • Carnivorous: Eats small fish, crustaceans, and other marine invertebrates.

Behavior:

  • Solitary and Territorial: Typically hides in crevices or under rocks and comes out at night to hunt.
  • Aggressive feeders: It is known to be quite aggressive during feeding but is not particularly dangerous to humans unless provoked.

In Captivity:

  • Aquarium needs: A tank with brackish water is recommended, though it can survive in freshwater for short durations. It needs plenty of hiding spaces (like caves or rocks).
  • Diet: In captivity, its diet can include live or frozen shrimp, fish, and other meat-based foods.
  • Water conditions: Brackish water with a salinity of 1.005–1.015 is ideal. The water temperature should range between 24–28°C (75–82°F).
